<image:title>About Us - Hi, I’m Jessica! Founder & Lead Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist</image:title>
<image:caption>I am a Registered Dental Hygienist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist with a deep passion for education, collaboration, and whole-health care. My journey in the dental field began in 2011 through the Dental Assisting program, followed by the Dental Hygiene program at Fanshawe College. Since 2014, I have proudly worked as a Registered Dental Hygienist in my hometown of Hanover, Ontario. Education has always been at the heart of my work. I am a lifelong learner, often taking new courses, exploring emerging research, and developing thoughtful resources to better support my patients and their families. In September 2020, I took a pivotal step forward by advancing my education in Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy, a decision that profoundly shaped both my clinical focus and my sense of purpose. As a dental hygienist, I have always loved empowering patients through education to improve their oral health and overall well-being. Myofunctional therapy expanded that passion even further, allowing me to address the foundational patterns of breathing, oral function, sleep, and development. During my training, I began to recognize my own myofunctional challenges and experienced firsthand the impact of addressing root causes rather than symptoms. I am grateful for this experience as it continues to guide my approach today. Becoming a mother has added an entirely new dimension to my work. Experiencing airway development, feeding, oral habits, sleep, and growth firsthand with my own daughter has brought a deeper level of insight, empathy, and clarity to the care I provide. It has reinforced the importance of early awareness, gentle intervention, and supporting families through both the clinical and emotional aspects of this journey. This lived experience continually shapes how I educate, assess, and support the families I work with.</image:caption>

<image:title>About Us - Meet Carla! Carla is a registered Dental Hygienist and Orofacial Myofunctional Therapist. Her dental journey began in 2005 in London, ON with a dental assisting program. I then jumped right into the dental hygiene program in Burlington, ON and graduated in 2008. Since 2009, she has been practicing as a dental hygienist in Hanover, ON. “I love what I do and continue to advance my knowledge every year.” Carla’s interest in Myofunctional Therapy started a number of years ago, and in early 2025, she decided to dive deeper by taking and completing a Myofunctional Therapy course. “I’m so excited to bring this knowledge into my patient care. Outside of the clinic, I’m a very busy mom of 4 young children. I bring patience, creativity, and an understanding of the hectic schedules families juggle every day. I love challenging myself, learning all I can, and working together with patients to find what works best, because there’s no single approach that works for everyone.”</image:title>

<image:title>About Us - Meet Judy! Judy has been a dental hygienist since 2012, and along the way her passion for airway health grew into a deeper calling. She now focuses on helping patients improve their breathing, sleep, and overall wellness by identifying and addressing the underlying causes of oral dysfunction - treat the root cause, not just the symptoms. Outside of the clinic, you’ll find her behind a camera working on her photography and exploring new places! Judy works with clients 1:1 virtually and is available afternoons and early evenings to support the busy schedules of families.</image:title>

<image:title>What is Myofunctional Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), also commonly referred to as Myofunctional Therapy is an exercise-based treatment used to treat Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders (OMDs). Think of it as physical therapy for the oral and facial muscles including the mouth, face, lips and tongue. Myofunctional disorders may include: a low tongue posture, tongue or lip tie, mouth breathing, snoring, atypical swallowing pattern, atypical chewing patterns, lips apart at rest or oral habits. The series of exercises work on a neuromuscular level too retrain and strengthen the oral and facial muscles to achieve a normal rest posture of the tongue, lips, and jaw. By strengthening weak muscles, learning proper function and making behaviour modifications, improvements can be be seen through breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing.</image:caption>

<image:title>What is Myofunctional Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is appropriate for young children and all ages of adults. In many cases, when an orofacial myofunctional disorder is present there are numerous symptoms and concerns associated. Many of the concerns that patients will present with are pieces of a bigger puzzle and myofunctional therapy to address one issue, will often solve more than one concern. Myofunctional Therapy helps to address the root causes of problems, not just the symptoms. The interaction between facial growth and muscle activity starts early on in our development and the functions of suction, chewing, swallowing, and nasal breathing in infancy plays an important role in growth patterns.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>What is Myofunctional Therapy - • In children, this therapy helps to promote healthy habits for life. Poor functional patterns such as low tongue posture and tongue thrusts, open mouth breathing, bottle feeding, sucking habits, sippy cups and restricted tongue ties, lack of chewing or low muscle tone all restrict facial growth and development. Early treatment can prevent numerous health concerns later in life. • In adults, years of poor habits, dysfunction and compensations can contribute to numerous other health concerns. A mouth breathing habit can be a consequence of having a low tone tongue, or a restriction in the tongue with other symptoms associated. Those suffering with TMD and/or TMJ jaw muscle pain, head and neck aches and even those with sleep apnea, could all be rooted to an OMD. Not only does myofunctional therapy address OMDs, but it often reduces or resolves many other underlying health concerns.</image:title>

<image:title>Mouth Breathing - Do you breathe through your mouth? Mouth breathing is when the jaw drops down to allow air in. This happens when we cannot get enough air in through our nose, so the mouth takes over. Mouth breathing can become a life long habit if not corrected, and can be detrimental to your health. When you mouth breathe, the tongue rests low in the mouth, the back of the tongue drops down and the airway becomes restricted. To compensate for a restricted airway, we position our head forward to allow more air to pass through. Over time this can lead to neck and shoulder tension, clenching or grinding, snoring and/or sleep apnea, TMJ pain, and anxiety or depression.</image:title>

<image:title>Snoring and Sleep Apnea - Snoring & Sleep Apnea For some people, the muscles in the back of the throat are weak and can collapse when laying back, disrupting the airway. When air flows past relaxed tissues, it causes them to vibrate resulting in the hoarse sound of snoring. Sleep apnea occurs when the muscles are weak also, but instead results in complete obstruction of the airway. Aside from the muscles of the throat, a weak tongue can also also fall back into the throat creating an obstruction. When the airway is blocked, breathing stops during sleep (apnea) and the body and brain are deprived from oxygen. A tongue tie or a low resting tongue are potential indicators of weak muscles and a compromised airway. Depriving the body and brain of oxygen can have detrimental health effects. ONLY medical doctors can diagnose sleep apnea.</image:title>

<image:title>Snoring and Sleep Apnea - Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome (UARS) Newly termed the “young, fit, female” version of sleep apnea Airway is not completely obstructed, but respiratory efforts are increased causing frequent arousals or awakenings These individuals are more likely to have low blood pressure, higher levels of anxiety and difficulty concentrating during the day. Often goes undetected because these individuals do not fit into the “typical” criteria for sleep disordered breathing</image:title>

<image:title>Jaw Pain - Jaw Pain and Headaches This is a topic that I am very passionate about. I have struggled myself with headaches and migraines my entire life and in more recent years, jaw pain. It is estimated that 20-25% of the adult population suffers from symptoms involving the TMJ (temporomandibular joint). The TMJ is one of the more complex joints in the human body. It is durable and meant to last a lifetime, but unfortunately TMJ disorders are on the rise. There are many different ways to alleviate jaw pain, but one treatment modality may not work for everyone, so determining the root cause of symptoms should always be investigated. A large number of our orofacial muscles are connected to the joint to facilitate its movement, which is where Myofunctional Therapy comes in to play an important role in treating TMJ disorders.</image:title>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5febdee48fbb57315011268e/1609808973884-72LF9KAZMBZFBK0ZWKGF/team.jpg</image:loc>
<image:title>Jaw Pain - The Team Approach Because the contributing factors involved can be so complex, managing and treating TMJ pain and other TMD symptoms often requires a skilled multi-disciplinary team. Myofunctional Therapy is a great place to start because it is non-invasive and studies have shown that it can significantly decrease jaw pain and headaches, especially when the underlying issue is tongue and muscle related. If needed, we will send a referral or recommend other healthcare providers with training in treating TMD, to help clients achieve the best results.</image:title>

<image:title>Oral Habits - Oral Habit Elimination Thumb and finger sucking often starts early on lasting the first few years of life, and then some children will stop on their own. It is usually started to provide comfort or to soothe themselves. But oral habits such as pacifier use, sippy cups, thumb/finger sucking, nail biting or lip biting and lip licking extending for long periods of time can have a negative impact on jaw shape, teeth position, tongue placement, breathing and speech development. This program is designed to help your child quit negative oral habits in a positive and interactive manner without the use of punitive and invasive appliances. It helps children build confidence and self esteem as they watch themselves give up addicting habits, typically within four weeks. We offer guidance and support to both the child and parents with an interactive program. Eliminating these habits is part of myofunctional therapy and the first step to restore functional growth and development.</image:title>

<image:title>Speech Concerns - Speech Concerns Myofunctional therapy exercises can be considered a foundational treatment when approaching speech problems. If the muscles and tongue are not working properly, children and even adults can experience difficulty in producing certain sounds. Therefore, it makes sense to rule out any muscular involvement prior to beginning a speech therapy program. A lisp is the most common speech concern associated with myofunctional symptoms. Lisping is a symptom that can often be associated with a tongue thrust and/or a mouth breathing habit. Clients with a lisp often struggle to make the correct "S" sound. ⇢ Other specific sounds that are connected with having a low tongue or a tongue thrust are “T”, “D”, “N” and “L”. These sounds require precise movement and placement of the tongue, which makes them challenging for those without fine control of their oral muscles. ⇢ A mouth breathing habit could impact the sounds “B”, “M” and “P” because they all require lip closure.</image:title>
